Polly Cat

I recently took a fun class on skillshare involving one of my favourite things, cats! ( I love dogs too btw)

Develop Your Illustration Style: Draw a Cat by Anne Bollman

Style is something that I am still very much experimenting with, I can see similarities in some of my patterns and artwork but I’m not sure I have found my ‘signature style’ yet.

For inspiration I chose Polly, our tiny little fighter. About this time last year she was recovering from a broken pelvis, we don’t know for certain how it happened but she was very lucky, a clean break and no nerve damage to her spine or tail.

Within days of having her surgery and a metal plate fitted she had her back leg up over her head washing as cats do, just as if nothing had happened.

Polly

I did a few sketches using some photographs of her for inpsiration then picked the one I liked the best and used it for my final illustration.

Polly in Watercolour and Ink

I liked how it turned out although I can always see room for improvement, I did show it to Polly who was suitably unimpressed in typical cat fashion.

Material used: Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours, Derwent Graphik fineliners and Arteza coloured pencils.

I’m still using up the big pack of Ken Bromley practice paper I bought ages ago when I was just starting out it was perfect but I do notice it’s not the greatest for wet on wet, it dries very patchy and cauliflowers badly, so I will be upgrading my paper once I run out.
