Poppies & Autumn Patterns

I’m starting to notice that often a colour pallette will very much influence my pattern designs, this is what happened when I was playing about with some flower doodles and suddenly a poppy appeared.

When I had drawn it I didn’t have a poppy in mind but something about the colour combination just made it happen, so I ran with it and drew some more.

I think this is one of my favourite patterns to date, sometimes things just fall into place and I’m really happy with this one.

After this I started playing about with some of the other flower doodles using the same colour pallette, in contrast to the poppies this one is a lot smaller in scale and more sparse but I like the delicate feel to it.

Often I will sketch out ideas on paper, and either scan them so I can use as a guide with my tablet, or live trace in illustrator if it’s suitable, but for a change I decided to just draw straight in Illustrator for the next patterns.

It feels so different drawing on a screen to a piece of paper, just the glide of the stylus and the angle of the tablet, I did try laying it flat instead of using the stand but that felt strange too. But I have found it helps to do some warm ups as I would on paper first, and when done just delete them. I seem to draw much better after that.

We were having a heatwave when I drew these, perhaps it was a subconscious wish for cooler weather making me choose an autumnal theme.
